Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is a condition in which a small middle-ear bone called the stapes gradually stiffens and loses its ability to move.

Hearing

Sound is transmitted less efficiently to the inner ear.

Otosclerosis

It can no longer vibrate freely, so sound is transmitted less efficiently to the inner ear.

How it feels

The main sign is gradually worsening hearing, usually in both ears, though not always at the same pace. Some people also notice tinnitus. Hearing often declines slowly over several years, which is why people adapt to it for a long time before seeing a doctor.

What causes it

The exact cause is not fully understood. Heredity appears to play a significant role: the condition is more common in families where it has occurred before. It affects women more often, and pregnancy can sometimes speed up its progression.

How it is treated

There are two main paths: hearing aids, or surgery in which the stiffened bone is replaced with a small prosthesis. Which option makes sense depends on the degree of hearing loss and the patient's own preference, discussed during a consultation.

This is general information and does not replace a consultation. If you notice changes in your hearing, get in touch: contact page.
